Subhankar Basu: Unprecedented violence erupted in the Bengal elections in the fourth phase. The Election Commission (EC) has banned political personalities from entering Kochbihar district for the next 72 hours. As a result, Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Kochbihar is also being canceled on Sunday. No political figure will be able to enter the five sensitive centers of the district, including Shitalkuchi, the commission said. The new directive has already caused a stir in the political arena. According to sources close to the Trinamool Congress, the new guidelines are aimed at arresting Mamata Banerjee. However, according to the schedule on Sunday, the Trinamool leader will go to Nagarakata.

Cooch Behar was the most volatile during the day in the fourth round of voting on Saturday. In the middle of the day, 4 people lost their lives in the firing of the central forces at Mathabhanga of Shitalkuchi center. And this incident has been in the headlines. There has been a lot of political pressure on this. The Election Commission is also practically uneasy about this. At the end of the day, the commission issued new guidelines after receiving reports from district administrators and commission-appointed observers. No one will be able to enter Kochbihar for the next 72 hours for fear of deteriorating law and order situation in the district. Besides, the commission is also going to rein in the campaign from the fifth round of voting. It is said that the campaign should be stopped 72 hours before the polling day.

Trinamool alleges that the decision was influenced by the BJP after seeing the new rules issued by the Election Commission. Such allegations were heard directly from the ruling camp leader Kunal Ghosh. BJP leader and candidate Shamik Bhattacharya’s counter-allegation is that the Election Commission is not influenced by an independent body, the BJP or any political party. However, this decision is unprecedented due to the violence, like a section of informed quarters, excluding politics. It is understood that the situation has not changed much despite the deployment of so many central forces by the commission.
